ABOUT THE EXHIBITION

Level directors Alice Lang, Courtney Coombs and Rachael Haynes have each selected one recent graduate for the showcase exhibition Whippersnappers. Selected by Alice Lang, Leena Riethmuller’s two channel video work Saliva (Self grooming) draws on the operation of the informe, and explores the potential of bodily fluids within performance to question and redefine ideas of selfhood and experiences of subjectivity. In her conceptual drawing practice, Brooke Ferguson transforms the quotidian elements of drawing such as graphite and paper. Rachael Haynes has selected the work Conductors for the exhibition, in which Ferguson works with the ideas of inscription, notation and score, translating the process of drawing into sound. Courtney Coombs has chosen Linda Phillips’ large-scale work It was difficult to remember a time before here. Phillips explores the fold in her practice as both a process and a device. Her folded canvases occupy a place of in-betweeness – between painting and sculpture, elaborating a personal inquiry into the potential of this liminal space.
